Billionaire Sir Richard Branson will rocket into space aboard a Virgin Galactic spaceship in 2021.

The company made the disclosure on Monday, August 3, adding that it expects to advance to the next phase of its test flight programme in Autumn with two manned flights.

According to a statement by the company, if both flights demonstrate the expected results, Sir Branson's flight will occur in the first quarter of 2021.

Legit.ng notes that the launch promises to blaze a trail for commercial flights aboard the firm's SpaceShipTwo rocket plane, for which a reported 600 people have paid $250,000 (N94,875,000) each to reserve a seat.

Firms such as Blue Origin and SpaceX are the competitions that Virgin Galactic is facing in the private space race.

Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin is the biggest threat Branson's firm is facing as it has pledged to take tourists to space and hopes it happens this year.

Elon Musk's SpaceX has already pledged to take Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa on a trip around the Moon in 2023.
