Joe Biden has named California senator Kamala Harris as his vice-presidential running mate ahead of the U.S presidential elections.
Experts say Biden's historic choice will likely bolster his chances of beating Donald Trump in an election many predict will be a close race.
Harris, a barrier-breaking former prosecutor, is the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, and is the first black woman and the first Asian American to run on a major party ticket.
She is known as a prominent African-American politician. But she has also embraced her Indian roots.
The 55-year-old senator says she has not grappled with her identity and describes herself simply as "an American."

After her parent's divorce, Ms Harris was raised primarily by her Hindu single mother, a cancer researcher and civil rights activist.
His campaign manager, Jennifer O’Malley Dillon added: “Ready to make history, change the world, and win.”
Biden’s decision followed a months-long search for a candidate who could lift the Democratic Party ticket in a wild and unpredictable election.
The decision is of great consequence, not only for Democrats’ immediate political prospects but for the future of the party.
His running mate will be considered Biden’s potential successor and the person who could become the U.S first female president.
Only two women have previously been nominated for the vice presidency of a major political party and neither was successful: Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska, in 2008, and the congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro in 1984.
Angela Davis, the philosopher and activist who became a prominent figure in the Black Power movement, was twice nominated as the vice-presidential nominee of the Communist Party in the 1980s.
Biden had on Wednesday, July 22, labelled Trump as the first racist U.S. president.
He made the comment while answering questions at a Service Employees International Union roundtable.
