John Obi Mikel has emerged surprise target for Sky Bet Championship side Stoke City as latest reports say the Potters are desperate in getting a holding midfielder to the club.
The former Chelsea star is currently a free agent having left Turkish club Trabzonspor in March after he allegedly had a fall out with the club management.
Brila.net citing StokeonTrentlive are reporting that Stoke boss Michael O'Neill has been told to bring in Mikel who has also been linked with Brazilian side Botafogo.
Mikel would bring vast experience, having made more than 350 appearances for Chelsea.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, he won the Champions League, Europa League, the Premier League twice, the FA Cup three times and the League Cup once.
Following a spell in China, he returned to England to sign for Middlesbrough on a short-term deal in 2019, before making the move to Turkey.

Stoke were previously linked with Mikel back in 2015, when they were still in the top flight.
Meanwhile, Nigerian football star John Obi Mikel has congratulated Trabzonspor following their Turkish Cup triumph.
The Black Sea Storm emerged victorious after beating fellow Super Lig side Alanyaspor 2-0 at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium.
A goal each from Abdulkadir Omur and Alexander Soerloth in either half of the encounter seal the victory for Eddie Newton's men.
It would be recalled that they narrowly missed out of the league title to Istanbul Basaksehir after finishing second on the log with 65 points - four-points shy of the eventual winners.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Yakubu Aiyegbeni has insisted that Sunday Oliseh was a better defensive midfielder than John Obi Mikel during his playing day with the Super Eagles.
The former Middlesbrough and Everton striker was countering Daniel Amokachi's claim that Mikel is the greatest Nigerian player ever.
But according to Aiyegbeni, the former Chelsea star is not even the greatest defensive midfielder that wore the green and white colours of the national team.
Instead, the Yak believes Oliseh is the greatest to have played for Nigeria while Mikel has more trophies than the former Super Eagles captain.
