The governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki, has praised the call made by President Muhammadu Buhari for a peaceful and credible governorship election.

Obaskei's special adviser on media and communications strategy, Crusoe Osagie, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday, September 17, in Benin.

According to him, President Buhari’s call is a re-assuring tunic that will boost voter turnout on Saturday, September 19.

While thanking the Nigerian leader for his wise counsel, Obaseki explained that Buhari's directive has doused the tension of the people ahead of Saturday's poll.

He went on to note that this has boosted the confidence of the people and it will make all the supporters and voters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) come out in large numbers to vote.

“Although the people have been apprehensive, President Buhari’s directive to that effect has doused the tension.

“The president is the leader of the All Progressives Congress but he is the first president and father of all. His call for safety and security of everyone before, during and after the governorship election is the assurance that will ginger the people to massively come out on Saturday,” he said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Edo Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign council stated that the allegation that it plans to burn the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state ahead of the governorship election is false.

Spokesman of the campaign council, Chris Osa Nehikhare, in a statement on Tuesday, September 15, said the claim is a fabrication by the APC in Edo state.

Nehikhare further said: “The APC is made up of people with defeatist mindset, who are grasping at straws in the face of imminent defeat in the September 19 governorship election.

Ahead of the election, former national chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, said he has no preferred candidate after he refused to endorse the flagbearer of the party, Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Odigie-Oyegun, however, advised the public to disregard a statement purported to have emanated from him projecting any candidate in the election.

In a statement he issued on Wednesday, September 16, the former APC chairman said he lacks the power to determine who rules the state for the next four years as such a decision rests with the electorate.
