How Boko Haram insurgents are recruiting our children - Borno governor

- Reports have emerged that the insurgent group, Boko Haram are now recruiting youths Borno state

Reports have emerged that the insurgent group, Boko Haram are now recruiting children and youths in Borno state.

The Borno state governor, Babagana Zulum made the disclosure on Thursday, September 17, when a committee of members of the House of Representatives paid him a visit in Maiduguri.

Zulum attributed the current trend to the lack of unemployment, Channels TV reported.

The governor also pointed out that the continued stay of able-bodied people in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps is partly fueling the trend.

He warned that the situation of things might escalate if internally displaced persons are not safely returned to their communities.

“The only solution we have now is to ensure the safe return of our people to their homes in a dignified manner. If nothing is done believe me sincerely we shall face a very serious challenge even more than what we are facing now,” he said.

“This is because right now the insurgents are recruiting many of our children into the sect because of the increasing unemployment rate.

The governor advocated for humanitarian support to be channelled towards the safe return of internally displaced persons to their communities.

Meanwhile, about 10 people have been killed and many others kidnapped by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Borno state.

The incident was said to have happened around 7 pm in Wassaram village, Ngamdu Ward in Kaga local government area of the state, Daily Trust reported.

The news outlet said the victims were mostly passengers whose vehicles had parked along the road following the restriction of vehicular movement in the evening.

In other news, a former chief of defence staff, Lt. General Alani Akinrinade, has sent a crucial message to President Muhammadu Buhari over happenings in the country.

Nigerian Tribune reported that the retired army chief advised the president to allow the restructuring of Nigeria now otherwise there may soon be no country.

Legit.ng gathered that he issued the warning on the night of Monday, September 14, at a dinner in Osogbo, the capital of Osun state in honour of the visiting chief of army staff, Lt General Tukur Buratai.
