Sad day in football as 6 academy players die after team bus plunge into river

The sporting world was thrown into mourning following the death of six Ghanaian youth players who were involved in a tragic accident.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed the death of the players on Saturday night, September 19, 2020.

The six met their death after a bus they were traveling in plunged into a river in Ghana's Ashanti region.

"The leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and the National Juvenile Committee (NJC) have learnt of the passing of six juvenile football players on Saturday, September 18, 2020 at Offinso, near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region," the GFA said in a statement.

"The GFA wishes to express our deepest condolences to the family of the six young footballers who passed away after the car they were traveling on submerged," the federation added.

It is understood the members of the Africa Vision Soccer Academy were on their way from a league registration for an upcoming competition.

Authorities revealed at least 36 passengers were aboard the ill-fated bus, with survivors said to have been admitted to the hospital.

“There were 36 passengers onboard. Our investigation revealed that the passengers were made up of football team members who were returning after taking part in a league [registration]," a Divisional Commander was quoted saying.

Those who succumbed are thought to be between the ages of 12 and 16.
