The November 2019 Bayelsa governorship election has continued to be the subject of a series of litigations, months after it was conducted.

Though the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, David Lyon, won the election, his victory was nullified after the court ruled that his running mate presented false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Subsequently, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Douye Diri, who came second in the poll was declared the winner.

However, in August, Governor Diri was sacked by the Bayelsa governorship election petitions tribunal.

The tribunal sacked Diri following a petition filed by the Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), claiming that it was excluded by INEC from participating in the poll.

Governor Diri challenged the ruling of the tribunal at the appeal court and won.

Nevertheless, in another surprise move, the candidate of the Liberation Movement who also participated in the governorship election, Vijah Opuama, is asking the Supreme Court to disqualify Governor Diri and his deputy, Lawrence Ewrujakpor.

According to the report filed by The Nation, Opuama lost at the tribunal as the panel struck out a petition he filed alleging Ewrujakpor submitted forged certificates to INEC.

Similarly, the Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal on the grounds it was statute-barred and contained pre-election matters that were beyond the scope of an election tribunal.

Meanwhile, after his victory against the ANDP, Governor Diri said those fighting him are fighting God.

The governor, who was joined by his supporters at his office, emphasised that he is a product of divine grace.

Also, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has congratulated Governor Diri on his victory at the Appeal Court on Friday, October 2.

Okowa said that the verdict of the appellate court was a welcome development, adding that the governorship election petitions tribunal, which nullified Diri’s election earlier, ought not to have entertained the petition in the first place as it was a pre-election matter.

Okowa stated this in a statement by his spokesman, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, in Asaba, and commended INEC for acting well on the matter.
