The Coalition for Democracy has urged #EndSARS protesters in Nigeria, to focus on the theme of their campaign which is reforming the Nigeria police.

The coalition said staying focus on the purpose of the #EndSARS protest will prevent subversive elements from hijacking it.

The president of the coalition, Samson Atawodi, while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, October 18, said that since the Nigeria Police Bill, 2020, has been signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari, the protesters should focus on its implementation.

Atawodi describing the protest as an opportunity for citizens to push for police reform, said that has been the original theme of the #EndSARS campaign.

He said:

"It would be recalled that President Buhari had in a memo dated September 16, 2020, communicated his assent to the Bill to the National Assembly, which repeals the Police Act Cap. P19. Laws of the Federation, 2004, and provides for a more effective and well organized Police Force in Nigeria."

Atawodi also said that with the establishment of an appropriate funding framework for the police in line with what is obtainable in other federal government key institutions, the new Act will enhance professionalism within the force.

He said the implementation through increased training opportunities will also create an enduring partnership between the police and communities in maintaining peace and combating crimes nationwide.

He said the fact that President Buhari has taken prompt action and disbanded the SARS unit of the police as demanded by the protesters is enough prove of his commitment to ending police brutality.

He also said that it would be unfair for the youths to continue to be on the streets since the president has agreed to implement suggestions on improving the Nigeria police.

Atawodi, however, noted that despite the dissolution of SARS and government's concession to implement these reforms, that the protests have continued.

He said any attempt by opposition politicians and other subversive elements to hijack the protest will cause untold hardship on Nigerians.
