74-year-old grandfather becomes world's oldest footballer (he is an African)

Ezzeldin Bahader has finally won the Guinness world record as the oldest professional footballer at the age of 74.

The Egyptian grandpa's award was delayed due to the global pandemic but has now defied the odds when he made an appearnace for a third-tier club called October 6.

The septugenarian met the requirements of making two professional outings in order to be guven the honorary award and his first came in March 21, shortly before the lockdown.

Bahader missed a penalty in his side's 3-2 defeat over the weekend as the record finally fell and his family were present to witness the historic feat.

Bahader told journalists after knocking 73-year-old Israeli player Isaak Hayik off top spot:

"I dream of being able to break my own record one more time, just to make the competition a little harder."

With a few weeks to his 75th birthday, Bahader could further extend the record but reports claim hhe is yet to sign a new deal with his present club.

Egypt also have the record of the oldest playewr to feature in the World Cup finals which was goalkeeper Essam El Hadary at the age of 45 at the 2018 edition in Russia.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlie reported that Yomi Sangodeyi, a Nigerian basketball star, has passed on at the age of 57 after losing a long battle to illness.

Reports claim the former D'Tigers star succumbed to lung cancer and the deadly coronavirus disease.

He was the first Nigerian Sportsman of the Year played and represented the country in several national competitions in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Legit.ng also reported that Herbert Omokhaye, former secretary-general of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has passed on at the age of 87.

His family confirmed that the former administrator died of a brief illness two months before his 88th birthday in December.

Omokhaye who was regarded as a man of “high integrity, equanimity and dignified bearing” by the current NFF President Amaju Pinnick.
