The presidency has defended President Muhammadu Buhari's reticence on the controversial Lekki shooting during his nationwide address on Thursday, October 22.

Speaking on Friday, October 23, during a live show on Channel TV, media aide to the president on media and publicity Femi Adesina, said Buhari's silence on the "carnage" is because an investigation is still ongoing.

Legit.ng recalls that the president addressed the country on Thursday evening, October 22, as the killing of protesters by the operatives of the Nigerian Army at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos overwhelmingly sparked global reactions.

But in what came as a shock, the president did not mention the Lekki shooting in his speeching, leading to another floodgate of criticisms from Nigerians who berated him for being aloof and insensitive, The Nation reports.

Defending his principal, Adesina said Buhari's silence on the attack was because the matter is still being probed by the top military command.

Adesina, who noted that Lagos state has also set up a judiciary panel on the incident, further stated that Buhari will speak after the conclusion of the investigation.

In his words:

“The Defence Headquarters issued a statement to say that it was investigating the matter. Lagos State Governor has also set up a probe panel to investigate what really happened.
“So, the President couldn’t have said anything because it would be premature and presumptuous while the investigation is ongoing. It is after the investigation has been concluded that he can speak on the matter.”
