Following the recommendation of the presidential panel for the dismissal and reprimand of some police officers amid mounting pressure from the EndSARS protest, emerging reports have shown that 16 operatives of the SARS were indicted for killing.
Legit.ng had reported that 37 police officers who belong to the now-disbanded controversial unit were recommended for dismissal as contained in the report of the special presidential panel set up by the federal government in 2018 on reform of the dreaded unit.
24 other officers of the scrapped unit were also billed to face prosecution over various professional misconduct.
Submitting the report of the presidential panel to the police commission, the executive secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Tony Ojukwu, urged the police regulating body to ensure speedy implementation of the findings.
16 SARS operatives indicted for killings in 5 states will face prosecution.
Legit.ng now understands that the recommendation was submitted to the federal government in 2019 without any action, but with the EndSARS protest calling for police reform, the report has been presented to Police Service Commission (PSC).
The report indicted 37 police officers in 12 states and the FCT for various rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, death in police custody, unlawful arrest, biased investigation, unlawful intimidation, harassment, criminal assault, torture, cruelty and others
The states are Akwa Ibom, Benue, Delta, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Kaduna, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Ogun, and Rivers.
Meanwhile, 16 of the 37 officers belonging to the SARS unit were accused of extrajudicial killing in five states and FCT Abuja. They will face prosecution.
