There was a controversial sending off of Remo Freuler after he was adjudged to have committed a professional foul on Mendy.

Madrid pulled the strings on Atalanta from then on as goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini was kept busy for the remaining 73 minutes of the game.

Isco made a lovely turn inside the box 18-yard but his shot was blocked by an Atalanta defender. Luka Modric could not keep his shot down as it went over the bar later on.

Vinicius received a brilliant through ball from Isco but the young Brazilian hesitated a second too long to hit his shot against a defender.

The best chance of the first half fell to Raphael Varane as his header was kept away by Gollini to remain goalless at half-time.

Chances were few and far between in the second half as the first chance of the period was from a tame Marcos Asensio's free-kick.

The deadlock was finally broken from an unlikely source with four minutes left to play as Mendy curled in the ball into the back of the net with his right-foot.

And that was how it ended as Real Madrid take a one-goal advantage back to Spain for the second leg in two weeks' time.
