Former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano has explained that nothing has changed about Lionel Messi's game despite his uncertain future at the Spanish club.

This comes days after Barcelona suffered a defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League in which Kylian Mbappe scored three goals as Messi failed to save his side from loss.

Before the start of the ongoing Spanish La Liga term, Lionel Messi wanted to leave Barcelona because of how the Catalans failed to win any title last season.

But no side was able to meet Barcelona's asking price which forced the Argentine to stay as his current deal at the Nou Camp will be expiring in the summer.

Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi played together at Barcelona for eight years before the 36-year-old moved to the Chinese Super League.

According to the report on Daily Mail, Mascherano explained that Lionel Messi is still at the top of his game for the Spanish giants.

''I see him happy in Barcelona.
''Even though the club is not doing extremely well, football-wise the way he is playing and how he moves on the pitch haven't changed from what I have seen in the past 15 years, so in that sense what I see is that he is playing extremely well.''

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Barcelona captain Lionel Messi was on the score sheet in their 1-1 draw against Cadiz in Sunday’s La Liga fixture and that goal means he has only failed to find the back of the net against eight teams he has met.

Messi scores as Barcelona get disappointing result against Cadiz in Spanish La Liga battle

The Catalan giants would have themselves to blame as they allowed 28-year-old midfielder Alex Fernandez grab the equalizer late in the game at Camp Nou.

Barcelona were first handed a penalty in the 31st minute after Isaac Carcelen from Cadiz tripped Pedri in which Lionel Messi stepped forward to score the goal a minute later.

They were heading for a win before Clement Lenglet's dangerous play against Ruben Sobrino gifted the visitors a penalty in the 89th minute which was scored to give them a point.
