FCT, Abuja - The minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, has said some people in the country are trying to tear the country apart for selfish reasons.

Premium Times reported that Mohammed made the statement on Saturday, July 24, in Abuja at a book presentation event.

He alleged that certain elements are attempting to exacerbate ethnic and religious differences in Nigeria.

He said the challenges facing the country are neither ethnicity nor religion.

The minister recalled that he used the premises of St Andrews Catholic Church, Oro, his hometown for Ramadan lectures for three consecutive years.

According to him, that was a shining example of religious harmony and peaceful co-existence in Nigeria.

He said:

“For three years, a Church making its premises available free of charge for the annual Ramadan lecture.
“This is contrary to the acrimony and mutual suspicion that many religious leaders are promoting today.''

Mohammed also disclosed that a Church in the Ikeja area of Lagos state had to shift its Sunday service forward to enable the Muslim faithful to celebrate Sallah when the date fell on a Sunday.

Bandits free 4 kidnapped victims after 67 days

In another news, six out of the 28 people who were abducted by bandits from Batsari town of Katsina state have regained their freedom.

Premium Times reported that the victims had been kidnapped in May along with 22 others when the gunmen invaded the town.

After holding the resident captive for 67 days, the bandits noted that 4 out of the 6 were released as Sallah gifts to their community in Katsina State.
