Ekiti gov’ship: TMG advocates less-policed polls

By Josephine Agbonkhese

The Transition Monitoring Group, TMG, Chairperson, Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, has said huge presence of security personnel in elections is capable of intimidating voters and causing apathy, which are serious concerns in any electoral process.

Reacting to the just-concluded governorship election in Ekiti State, Dr. Akiyode-Afolabi said: “TMG is concerned with the massive deployment of security agencies and personnel during the elections. The country should be working towards a less-policed electoral process.

“We are of the opinion that mobilising the whole gamut of the country’s security infrastructure is not necessary as this could intimidate voters and further drive voter apathy, which is a key concern for the electoral process, looking at the discrepancy between the number of registered voters and those who actually voted.”

While commending the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for improvements in the management of the elections in the state, TMG called on umpire to consider setting up polling units in the future in ways in which a second and third verification of voter’s choices are almost impossible to stem the tide of vote buying, calling on “all actors to step up conversations and actions on this worrying trend and the best way to deal with it.”
