Some basketball fans in Abuja decided to use the game to entertain themselves during the festive season by turning out to watch the Zenith Bank Women Basketball League.

The fans told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja that the game was the best form of entertainment they could get during the period.

They also said watching their best teams play and win could help them eliminate stress.

Tunde Johnson, a civil servant, said he had not watched a basketball game in a while as watching sports was his best form of relaxation.

“I have not watched basketball game in a long while due to work and the location where it is played.

“I love to watch basketball because I played the game as a student in secondary school. So, since I have seen the opportunity I decided to be here.

“For me, it is also the best way to relax during this period instead of the cinemas and parks,” Johnson said.

Vero Ameh, a business woman who was at the stadium with her kids, said she brought them to watch the game and get them inspired to play the sport as well.

“My late husband used to play basketball, though not professionally, and it has been his dream for his children to do sports, and basketball if possible.

“I have two daughters and they play basketball at home. So, I have brought them here to draw inspiration from the ladies playing here, so that at least either of them will get serious with the sport.

“This is a lot better than watching the television at home or playing games during this holiday,” Ameh said.

Juliet Nathan, a student, said she was at the stadium to support her friend’s team.

“My friend plays for FCT Angels and I am here to cheer her and her teammates up.

“I also love basketball and play the game in school, so I am here to learn a few skills to help me improve my style of play as I aspire to play the game professionally in future,” she added.

Joseph Okon, also a civil servant, said he enjoys the game better than football.

“The way people follow football and get addicted to the game is the same way I follow basketball.

“I love to watch basketball, and can travel outside FCT to watch the game though I never had the opportunity of playing the game.

“It also relieves me of stress than hanging out in a restaurant and drinking beer,” he said.

NAN reports that a total of 18 teams are participating in the league which began on April 10 and ends on Monday.
