Born Tawanda Marimbe, 25, the entertainer appeared before Harare magistrate Josephine Sande charged with contravening Section 59 (2) (a) of the Copyright and Neighbouring Act Chapter 26:05.
The matter will be back in court on April 27.
Allegations led by the State are that on January 12, 2018, DJ Tawaz unlawfully and intentionally released the song Ndamuwana on ZiFM Stereo without his counterpart Slick Beezy's knowledge.
Prior to the offence, Slick Beezy - real name - Jonathan Rakatsinzwa had compiled a beat and added his voice around May 2017 and approached the accused for a possible collaboration.
The accused referred the complainant to his executive producer, Kelvin Sagomba aka MC Cut who in turn suggested to write verses for both artistes and another third artiste (Swaythe 3rd).
The song was then recorded at Showtime Records in Vainona with the complainant paying all the required $290 thereby making him the owner of the copy right in terms of section 14(4) of the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act.
On December 1, the complainant uploaded the song on Sound Cloud but was advised to pull it down by MC Cut saying it still required his touch.
The complainant complied but on January 12 this year DJ Tawaz released the song without Slick Beezy's verses.
However, DJ Tawaz has denied the charges saying he is the one who came up with concept and not the other way round.
