Speaking to this publication Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Association Executive Director Michaqel Ndiweni said, "As an association e feel nothing will come out of this, remember we have fuel coupons too, I have spent weeks without fuel but holding on a coupon. A coupon does not make mealie meal available, it does not treat the cause of mealie meal shortages."
Ndiweni further said the government's decision to create coupons showed that Harare administration has failed to run the land after two decades of embarking on a chaotic land reform program.
"It's simple failure to think ahead, failure by those who parceled out land to their friends and have no clue what farming is, have proved failures after 19 years of owning land, ordinarily they should have learnt the tricks of the game by now. I would suggest a re- possession of those farms and give them back to able farmers."The mealie meal shortage is exacerbated by looting in the agricultural sector, missing 3 billion, people by each other luxury cars with funds meant for agricultural support, looting of resources, corruption at GMB where mealie is shipped to the black market by retail owners and managers to be sold in exorbitant prices. "
South African based political analyst Kelvin Mazhandu said the move by the Minister was going to be chaotic and cause food riots that will cripple Harare administration.
"The minister did not think as a Professor that he is well respected for. If you read well into the proposal you will see that the outcome will be more partisan corruption in the distribution of the coupons to the so called disadvantaged families." Mazhandu said. "I can tell you as a matter of fact that you will see millers and the masses getting frustrated when the retailers connive with the coupon distributors and in no time food uprising will erupt all over the country and any government that knows that it cannot kill every citizen should be afraid of such an uprising. A hungry person with a family to feed is more dangerous than an ISIS soldier."
