'Bigwigs fooling Mnangagwa on graft'

PEOPLE surrounding President Emmerson Mnangagwa pretend to love him when in reality they will be masking their corrupt tendencies, opposition legislators have said.

This comes after Mnangagwa has declared zero tolerance to corruption. Speaking in the National Assembly on Thursday, MDC MP for Southerton Peter Moyo said people who bootlick the president are the most corrupt.

"I would like to add my voice on the State of the Nation Address which was delivered by the president. I want to dwell on the issue that he pointed out with regards to corruption.

"The president alone cannot fix this problem. It needs all of us to put our heads together and make sure that we defeat this disease, which is on the rise in our country.

"Those people who surround the president sometimes ululate when he arrives and shower him with praises, saying he is a good man and he has done this and that. If you look around, most of these people are corrupt. They are the ones who are instigating corruption in this country," Moyo said.

Moyo said people must be united to fight corruption. "You look at the people who were arrested at the airport with gold ― those are the people entrusted to hold influential positions and they take that as an opportunity to loot resources and smuggle them out of the country. If you go to those people, they are the same people who are saying

'Iam close to the president' yet they are destroying the lives of our children. I call upon every Zimbabwean to be a police officer or whistle-blower." MDC MP for Makoni Central David Tekeshe said investors were shunning Zimbabwe because people in top positions are corrupt.

"I am pleading with the Executive not to be corrupt. There was an investor called (Nigerian billionaire businessman Aliko) Dangote; people were happy to hear of his coming but he heard that Zimbabwe was very corrupt and he just left - that is the reason, he saw it not fit to invest in Zimbabwe.

"When we speak about the ease of doing business, let us do it wholeheartedly. We must not demand bribes or kickbacks when giving people contracts."
